Parents' access to child's chats

Parents can monitor chat messages received by children under 16 years old

Written by Lukas Grenstad

What is parental access to chats?

Hoopit gives parents the ability to monitor chat messages their children receive in Hoopit – without being able to write, react, or leave any trace. The feature is designed to provide safety and insight, especially in communication between adults and minors.

How it works

When a child under 16 is added to a chat, associated parents are automatically added as hidden readers in the same chat. Parents' chats appear in a separate tab called "Child" in the chat overview – separated from their own chats under "My chats".

As a parent you can:

  • Read all messages in real time

  • See the entire message history

  • See if the child has read messages (read status from the child is visible to you)

As a parent you cannot:

  • Write or send messages

  • React to messages (emoji, likes)

  • See who else is in the chat

At the top of the chat, a clear message is displayed: "Read-only access – messages cannot be sent in this mode."

Age limit

The feature is automatically activated for children under 16 years old. When a child turns 16, parents are no longer automatically added to new chats. This is to respect the young person's right to gradually increased privacy.

No trace is left

Parents' reading of chats is completely invisible to coaches and athletes:

  • Parents do not appear in the participant list in the chat

  • Parents' reading generates no "seen by" indicator – the message remains "unread" for everyone else

  • Parents do not receive push notifications or unread counters for children's chats

Frequently asked questions

Can the child or coach see that I'm reading the chat?
No. You do not appear in the participant list, and no "read by" notifications are generated when you open the chat.

Do I get notified when new messages arrive in my child's chat?
No. Children's chats are muted for parents – you can read them when you yourself open the app under the "Child" tab, but they do not send push notifications or red bubbles.

What happens when the child turns 16?
Hoopit automatically stops adding parents to new chats. Existing access is handled according to the club's settings.

Does this apply to all chats the child is in?
Yes – all chats the child is added to, whether it is team chat, training chat, or direct messages with coaches.
